Dr. Kat Nichols
Learning Specialist
After graduating from UW-Madison, Kat Nichols moved to New York City where she completed a M.S. in Education with a focus on disability studies. In a NYC public high school, she instructed and supported students in all content areas (Special Education, English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and worked in collaboration with students to develop their study and organizational skills.
After a few years, she moved to North Carolina, and earned a Ph.D. in Education, from UNC-Chapel Hill's Culture, Curriculum, and Change program. While completing her doctoral degree, she taught undergraduate and graduate students in Literacy and Special Education programs at UNC-Chapel Hill; instructed community college students in GED, remedial English, and liberal arts programs; and taught and supported students in a New Jersey high school. She also tutored students of all ages attending private and public schools and advised undergraduate students at UW-Madison.
Her dissertation research was informed by the critical participatory action research (CPAR) epistemology, which is also central in her teaching philosophy. One of her ongoing research goals is to use research methods, and a blending of science and the arts, to create inclusive spaces for all students where meaningful learning experiences can occur. She is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board Honor Societies.
Most recently, Kat worked at Ripon College as an Assistant Professor of Educational Studies. She was an instructor, advisor, and mentor to pre-service teachers and supervised their student teaching in various Wisconsin public school districts. Kat lives east of Madison with her husband Jonathan and daughter Josephine.
