John Richter

John Richter enters his fourth season as Director of Football Operations in 2026 after previously serving one season as a graduate assistant and four years as a student assistant with the program.

In his role, Richter works closely with Head Coach Luke Fickell and Chief of Staff Greg Gillum on the daily operations of the program. His responsibilities include assisting with budget management, coordinating team travel, and serving as a liaison between the coaching staff and various athletic department units.

In 2022, Richter worked closely with defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jim Leonhard on scouting, game planning, and practice script development. He also assisted with coaching the safeties, coordinated the scout team during practice periods, and worked from the press box on game days helping manage the Badger defense.

As a student assistant, Richter supported the defensive staff with opponent breakdowns, assisted with special teams coordination, and collaborated with graduate assistants and staff to organize scout team periods during practice.

Richter’s coaching career began at Brookfield Central High School, where he transitioned from player to offensive assistant coach during his junior year, working with the quarterbacks. He helped implement a no-huddle offense during his senior year as the team advanced to the WIAA Division 2 State Championship game. Following his graduation, the school created an award in his honor.

A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Richter earned a bachelor’s degree in Real Estate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in May 2022. He later completed a master’s degree in Sports Leadership from Wisconsin in December 2023.
