Women's Soccer Falls to Illinois State
November 02, 2001 | Women's Soccer
In the story of the season, the Wisconsin women's soccer team dominated yet another game, but couldn't come away with the victory in a 2-1 loss to Illinois State Friday in Normal, Ill. It was the Badgers' eighth loss decided by a single goal this season.
'It was even more exemplified today,' said coach Dean Duerst of the season's story.
The Badgers' (4-11-3) defense stifled the Redbirds (13-4) in the first half, holding ISU to a lone shot and zero attempts on goal. Wisconsin bombarded ISU keeper Lynley Hilligoss in the opening session, firing 11 times and getting eight on goal. UW took the lead on sophomore Jenny Kundert's (Madison, Wis.) first goal of the season. Kundert broke UW's four-game scoring drought 21 seconds before the break to put Wisconsin up 1-0.
'Our team came out and they were inspired,' Duerst said. 'They were fired up.'
But in the second half, the tale of the year crept up on UW. Bucky was outshot by ISU, 7-6, and Annie Wayland tied the contest with her 16th goal of the season at 74:10. With 15 seconds remaining in the game, Illinois State grabbed the win from the Badgers on Ty Winkelhake's goal.
'It's unreal,' said a shocked Duerst.
Wisconsin closes its 2001 season Sunday against St. Louis at 1 p.m.
'I think our game plan today worked ' to come out with a lot of energy,' Duerst said. 'We'll put everything we have into it and now get the result. Let's make everything go our way. '
