The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team completed first day of action at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. The Badgers took runner-up spots in two out of seven events on Friday.
'The meet got off to a solid start, Hansen said. 'We were hot and cold in some places, but we showed progress in some really important areas.'
Sophomore Matt Marshall (Chico, Calif.) finished second in the 100 yard butterfly in an NCAA consideration time of 47.65. Marshall also assisted in the Badgers' other second-place finish, the 400 medley relay, clocked at 3:13.58.
The relay, which included senior Brendan Coyne (Pelham, Ala.), senior Lance Jones (Corning, Calif.), Marshall and sophomore Dale Rogers (Oroville, Calif.), finished behind the host Texas Longhorns. In the leadoff position, Coyne set the UW school record in the 100 backstroke with a 48.81, breaking Adam Byars' old mark of 48.86.
'We most likely qualified six [total] people for NCAAs after the first day and we hope to add to that tally as the meet progresses,' Hansen said.
The Texas Invitational continues Saturday, with prelims starting at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
