Women's Swimmers Cruise Past Rockets
October 24, 2002 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team defeated Toledo, 135-89, Thursday night at the UW Natatorium. The Badgers grabbed 10 wins in 13 events and swam the top time in the 400 free relay, but exhibitioned the event.
Leading the charge for the Badgers, senior Sarah McCauley, junior Bethany Pendleton and rookie Anna Trinidad all picked up two individual wins apiece. McCauley won the 50 and 200 free, Pendleton was victorious in the 200 back and 1000 free, while Trinidad touched first in the 200 breast and 200 fly.
Carly Piper broke her pool record time in the 500 free with a 4:46.51. Piper's old record set last season was 4:50.02. Piper's time is a NCAA B-qualifying standard and she nearly swam an automatic cut (4:45.71) with only teammate Rebecca Johansson in the pool.
On the boards, frosh Megan Balkenbush captured second on both the 1-meter (259.73) and 3-meter (252.08).
The Badgers keep right on swimming this weekend with action tomorrow and Saturday in Iowa City. Wisconsin opens Big Ten action against the Hawkeyes Friday night at 6 p.m. and continue the dual meet Saturday at 11 p.m.
