In their first outing of the season, the Badger women's basketball team was defeated by the Wisconsin AAU Select team 85- 74 in an exhibition game at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers fell behind early trailing the AAU team 41- 14 with 5:50 remaining in the first half. The Wisconsin Select hit 81 percent of their three point attempts; converting nine of 11 in the first half. The Badgers were able to cut their lead to 18 at the half with Lello Giebsa scoring nine of her 16 points in the closing minutes.
'When you play an exhibition team, they come in here and tell us what we have to work on,' head coach Jane Albright said of her team 's performance. 'We did a lot of really good things today, when you talk about a team that's lost so much experience. They're playing with really good awareness.'
After a slow start, the Badgers were able to post impressive numbers. If records included exhibition games, four players would have posted career bests.
Junior starting center, Emily Ashbaugh would have tied a career high of 17 points and added nine rebounds. Ashbaugh, who shot 59 percent from the free throw line last year, made 11 of 12 shots from the line. Stephanie Rich hit the team's two three point shots and racked up 16 total points, all of which in the second half. Making her first appearance as a Badger, Lello Gebisa, a junior transfer from Duke crushed her previous game high point total of six by scoring 16 points.
Senior co-captain Kristi Seeger, led the team with a what would have been a career high 11 rebounds and put up 10 points. Freshmen Jordan Wilson, Ashley Joesphson and Annie Nelson also made their debuts as Badgers.
The Badger's saw some familiar faces on the AAU Select team, former Badgers Tamara Moore and Jessie Stomski put up 12 and 8 points, respectively, for the AAU Viking Velocity. Moore, who currently plays with the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA led her team with six assists. They were also joined by Badger alumni Dee Dee Pate and Karie Cattanach.
The Badgers look ahead to their next exhibition match up Thursday, when they face Lithuania at 7:00 p.m. in the Kohl Center.
