Men's Swimmers Top No. 10 Arizona
November 02, 2002 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The No. 18 Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team defeated 10th-ranked Arizona, but fell to No. 2 Auburn Saturday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The Badgers also defeated the Mexican National team.
For the second-straight day, the Badgers swam extremely well against top-10 competition, winning four events, including both relays. The Badgers tallied 69 points to Arizona's 24 and the Mexican National team's 17. Auburn scored 95 points.
'This is the best we've swam as a team in my three-and-a-half years here,' coach Eric Hansen said. 'The system is in place, people have adapted and now we're starting to reap the rewards. We now have a solid core of athletes on both sides that can compete at this level.'
The Badgers opened and closed the meet with wins in the 400 medley relay and 400 free relay, respectively. The 400 free relay team of Dale Rogers, Adam Mania, Eric Wiesner and Matt Marshall picked up a NCAA B qualifying standard in 2:59.81. Marshall also won the 50 free (20.72) and freshman James Wike touched first in the 200 back (1:47.70).
The Badgers get a week off before traveling to Northwestern Friday, Nov. 15. The Badgers take on the Wildcats at 5 p.m.
