The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost for the first time this season Sunday night. The Badgers dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 10 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. The Badgers close their season-opening tournament, the adidas Invitational, with a 1-1 record.
'The team is very disappointed with the result and that 's a good thing,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'They showed they can play with anybody in the country which is a huge mental jump from where we were at the end of last season.'
A close play between Nebraska's Christine Latham and UW 's goalkeeper Kelly Conway determined the game's outcome as Nebraska notched its lone goal in the 30th minute. NU goalkeeper Erin Miller launched the ball the length of the field and Conway came out to intercept it. With their attentions focused on the ball, Conway and Latham collided and Latham tallied her first goal of the season.
'Kelly was very active tonight,' Duerst said. 'Tonight she was a cool cat, ready to pounce and not give up second shots. '
Duerst also credited the play of his seniors and defense in their ability to hold the 10th-ranked Huskers to one goal.
'Our team stood up to their physical challenges and speed of play,' Duerst said.
The Badgers play in the Cyclone Classic next weekend at Ames, Iowa. Wisconsin takes on Arizona Friday at 2 p.m., and host Iowa State Sunday at 1 p.m.
