Badgers Outmanned by Hoosiers
October 10, 2003 | Men's Soccer
Playing a man short for most of the game, the Wisconsin men's soccer team was unable to overcome Indiana's offense as the Badgers fell 3-0 to the Hoosiers on Friday at the McClimon Complex. The Badgers lost their leading scorer, Jed Hohlbein, in the 19th minute to a red card.
Wisconsin (7-7-0, 1-2-0 Big Ten) mounted several scoring threats against Indiana (4-3-4, 2-0-1 Big Ten), but was unable to capitalize on the chances. The Badgers managed 12 shots against the Hoosiers, including five from junior David Martinez. Four of Martinez's shots were on-goal.
'Playing a man down against Indiana for as long as we did, I thought we played pretty well,' Wisconsin head coach Jeff Rohrman said. 'We were unfortunate near the end of the game not to get a couple of goals. I thought we pushed forward and created a couple of good chances, we just didn't reward ourselves.'
Indiana's first goal of the night came late in the first half when midfielder Pat Yates took a pass from teammate Drew Shinabarger, and put it past Wisconsin goalie Eric Hanson, who had moved forward in the goalkeeper's box.
The Hoosiers struck again just seconds into the second half when defenseman Julian Dieterle took a pass from Indiana's top-scorer Ned Grabavoy.
The final goal of the game came as Grabavoy took a pass from forward Jacob Peterson and shot it through Hanson's legs.
'I was a little bit disappointed in how they got some of their goals, even though we were a man down,' Rohrman said. 'At the end of the day we still probably could have done a little better on the second goal, and on the third goal we could have done a bit of better defending and we're okay there.
'I thought in the back we played pretty well. I just think in the attack we have to do a little more in terms of putting the ball in the net. I thought today we still created chances, we've just got to put them in the hole. '
The Badgers are remain at home on Wednesday as they host Marquette at 7 p.m. Wisconsin will once again be without Hohlbein, who will miss the game due to Friday 's red card.
