October 17, 2003 | Women's Soccer
The 25th-ranked Ohio State women's soccer team got a goal from Heather Miller at the 28:02 mark and an insurance goal from Colleen Hoban in the second half to post a 2-0 win over Wisconsin at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday night.
With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 9-2-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the Big Ten, while the Badgers fall to 7-7-1 and 3-5-1.
"Ohio State did a great job," Wisconsin head coach Dean Duerst said. "We didn't make the breaks go our way. We didn't do a very good job in the first half, but we played extremely well in the second half."
Ohio State held a slim 9-7 advantage in shots in the first half, but had more quality chances than the Badgers as it posted a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
Heather Miller recorded the only tally of the first half when she put an unassisted blast from 35 yards out past UW keeper Kristin Sonderman.
The Buckeyes made the one-goal lead hold up until 17:30 remained. Hoban took a feed from Melissa Miller into the penalty area and beat Sonderman from the right side for her sixth goal of the season. Danielle Dietrich was also credited with an assist on the play.
"They got fourtunate to score off two free kicks," said Duerst. "I was really proud of how our team played in the second half. We need to find a way to score and if we can we will be a great team."
Ohio State held a 5-3 edge in shots after the half and a 14-10 advantage for the match. The Buckeyes recorded three corner kicks, while the Badgers had one.b
Sonderman made six saves in goal for Wisconsin, while Emily Haynam recorded three saves to pick up the shutout win.
The Badgers' road trip doesn't get any easier as it travels to 11th-ranked and Big Ten leader Penn State on Sunday for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The Nittany Lions' web site (gopsusports.com) will offer and audio broadcast of the contest.
