Penalties Cost Men's Soccer in Michigan
October 19, 2003 | Men's Soccer
Two first-half fouls proved costly as the Badgers fell 4-1 in Ann Arbor on Sunday. Sophomore Phil Doeh scored his second goal in two games for Wisconsin.
The Badgers (8-8-0, 1-3-0 Big Ten) struck first when junior forward Jed Hohlbein saw Doeh in the sixth minute. Doeh took Hohlbein's pass on the left side of the goal and drilled it to the opposite post for his third goal of the season and his second of the week.
'I thought we came out strong right away,' Wisconsin head coach Jeff Rohrman said. 'We created a good opportunity to score the goal.'
The momentum shifted direction, though as a Wisconsin hand-ball in the tenth minute set up a penalty kick for Michigan's Kevin Taylor to even the score.
The Badgers had trouble recovering from the call, and allowed two more goals in the first half.
'We didn't deal with the perceived injustice very well,' Rohrman said. 'We were still reeling when they scored their second goal.'
Michigan (11-4-0, 3-1-0 Big Ten) scored its second goal off the foot of junior forward Knox Cameron, who took a pass from Ryan Sterba and put it past Wisconsin goalkeeper Eric Hanson.
Another Badger foul allowed a second Wolverine penalty kick which was capped off by Taylor's second score of the day.
'On their third goal, I think our defense got caught flat, ' Rohrman said. 'Our defense wasn't as sharp as it needed to be.
'We didn't deal with adversity the way we should have. We didn't show the maturity we needed to in those situations.'
The Badgers played with renewed vigor in the second half, but were unable to get back in the game.
'In the second half we competed like we should have the entire game,' Rohrman said. '[At halftime] I gave them the choice to come out and play or to pack up and go home, and they chose to play, and I give them credit for that.'
Wisconsin looks to makeup for Sunday's loss when the team returns home Wednesday to take on DePaul, and again Sunday to host Michigan State.
