Powerful Penn State Too Much For Badgers
October 19, 2003 | Women's Soccer
The 11th-ranked Penn State women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday by posting a 5-0 win over Wisconsin. Four goals during the second half of the opening half of play proved to be too much for the Badgers to overcome.
"They're the best team that we've faced this year and I think they're the best team that I've seen in a lot of years at Penn State," Wisconsin head coach Dean Duerst said. "They really made the most of their opportunities. They had three or four chances and they put them all in."
Penn State (14-2-2, 8-1-0 Big Ten) broke through for the first goal of the contest just past the midway mark of the opening half as Heidi Drummond converted on a breakaway at the 22:57 mark. Stephanie Smith assisted on the goal.
Tiffany Weimer extended the Nittany Lions' lead to 2-0 at 27:22 when Tiffany Weimer scored her 19th goal of the season off a feed from Carmelina Moscato. Moscato got into the act herself just under eight minutes later, tallying an unassisted goal that got past UW starting keeper Kristin Sonderman to make it 3-0.
Joanna Lohman closed out Penn State's productive first half with her 13th goal of the year at 40:30 on a header off a cross from Heather Tomko.
Stefani Szczechowski replaced Sonderman in goal for the second half and allowed just one goal with just 3:51 remaining. Drummond and Smith hooked up for their second goal and assist of the day, respectively, on the play.
Wisconsin (7-8-1, 3-6-0) was outshot 15-4 in the match. Sonderman recorded two saves, while the team was credited with one. Amanda Brown didn't need to make a save in posting the shutout, but the Penn State team did make one stop.
The Badgers return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when they close out the Big Ten season at Minnesota.
"Our goal is to finish strong in the next three games," Duerst said. "Our kids need to focus on finishing out the Big Ten season with a win going to Minnesota being focused, concentrated and getting some goals."
