Badgers Outlast UW-Milwaukee 2-1
October 29, 2003 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team moved one step closer to "winning Wisconsin" Wednesday night, posting a 2-1 win over UW-Milwaukee at the McClimon Complex. Molly Meuer and Kara Kabellis each scored first-half goals to lead the Badgers.
With the victory, Wisconsin improves to 9-8-1 overall and 2-0 against in-state competition this season. The Badgers also defeated Marquette 3-0 on Sept. 9 and have one game remaining in intrastate competition coming up on Sunday when they host UW-Green Bay.
Wisconsin dominated the majority of the action throughout and came away with a decisive 17-2 edge in shots, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Badgers also tallied 10 corner kicks compared to two for the Panthers.
The hosts opened the scoring at the 7:51 mark. Bethany Heine took a free kick from 35 yards out and Molly Meuer made a run at the ball and headed it past UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin from inside the penalty kick stripe for her fourth goal of the season.
The Panthers (8-8-1) got a bit of a gift in scoring the equalizer at the 26:04 mark. Badger defender Elly Patterson attempted to clear the ball out of the penalty area via a header, but the ball went directly to Elizabeth Chudy who lofted a shot from 20 yards out over the outstretched reach of UW keeper Stefani Szczechowski.
Just when it looked like the teams would head into halftime tied 1-1, the Badgers used some late-half magic to take a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin earned a corner kick with just under 30 seconds remaining in the half. Katy Lindenmuth took the corner and served a ball into the box where Kabellis was able to gather it and put home the game-winner with just six seconds remaining in the half.
The Badgers continued to control action until late in the second half. UWM put forth a late flurry of offensive pressure in the final five mintues of the match, but never managed to get a shot off as Wisconsin outshot the Panthers 7-0 in the second half.
Szczechowski didn't need to make any saves in goal in picking up the victory. St. Aubin made five saves in the first half for UWM before giving way to Molly Schneider in the second half who made four stops.
The Badgers wrap up their regular season Sunday when they host UW-Green Bay for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Senior Day.
