Swimmers Enjoy Success at Janet Evans Invite

University of Wisconsin junior-to-be Adam Mania led a contingent of four Badger swimmers that earned place finishes at the 10th-annual Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles last weekend. Mania earned the highest finish by UW swimmers by posting a time of 56.52 to finish fourth in the 100-yard backstroke Sunday.
Mania led the 100 freestyle final after 50 meters on Friday, but faded to finish eighth (52.34). He added another eighth-place finish in the 200 backstroke later in the day (2:06.78).
Matt Marshall, who will be a senior in the fall, earned two place finishes. On Saturday, Marshall tied for seventh in the 50 free, touching in at 23.70. His time was identical to that of Olympian Gary Hall, Jr. Marshall also placed fifth in the 100 butterfly Sunday in a time of 55.67. Marshall is the UW school record-holder in the event.
Carly Piper, the defending Big Ten Female Swimmer of the Year who is preparing for her junior year, led UW's female competitors by earning four top-eight finishes. She opened the meet by finishing sixth in the 800 free Thursday in a time of 8:52.05. She added another sixth-place finish in the 400 free on Friday, finishing in 4:21.12. Piper's third place-finish came Saturday as she took seventh in the 200 free in a time of 2:06.37. She wrapped up the invite Sunday by placing eighth in the 1,500 free, touching the wall in 17:05.31.
Bethany Pendleton, who recently completed her junior year at UW, added a seventh-place finish in the 200 individual medley. She swam the event in a time of 2:23.31.
