Badgers Settle For 1-1 Tie With Iowa State
September 12, 2003 | Women's Soccer
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team dominated every statistical category except the one that counted, settling for a 1-1 tie with Iowa State in the opening night of play at the Rocky Rococo Invitational Friday.
The Badgers held a dominating 25-8 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to record the game-winning goal. With the tie UW moves to 4-1-1 overall, while Iowa State's record now stands at 2-1-1.
"We just didn't finish the easy one," Wisconsin head coach Dean Duerst said. "We needed to step up and put one away. A lot of other chances we wanted it too bad. We were not calm enough when we had easy chances."
The Cyclones wasted little time in jumping out to the 1-0 lead. With only 55 seconds expired in the match, Kristina Baumann took a thru ball from Erin Weldon and chipped a shot from 30 yards out over UW keeper Stefani Szczechowski (Plymouth, Mich./Ladywood) for the goal.
Wisconsin knotted things up in the 33rd minute when freshman Emily Kintzer (Madison, Wis./East) was the recipient of a thru ball of her own from Marisa Brown (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township). The freshman dribbled her way around ISU keeper Beth Chapman at the top of the box and put home the first collegiate goal of her career.
The Badgers created numerous opportunities for themselves throughout the the second half, posting a 14-3 shots advantage, but could never get the goal it needed. Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime, before UW outshot the Cyclones 3-2 in the second OT.
Chapman made seven saves for Iowa State, while Szczechowski stopped three shots.
Wisconsin closes out play at the Rocky Rococo Invitational at 1 p.m. Sunday when it takes on Nebraska.
