Nebraska's Late Goal Nips UW 2-1
September 14, 2003 | Women's Soccer
Ashley Carter scored with 1:43 remaining in the second half to give Nebraska a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Rocky Rococo Invitational.
Nebraska improves to 3-2-1 with the win, while Wisconsin falls to 4-2-1. Michigan and Nebraska each posted 1-0-1 records at the invite, but Michigan was declared the tournament champion by virtue of holding a higher goal differential than the Cornhuskers. The Wolverines outscored their opponents by two in their two matches, while Nebraska had a one-goal advantage.
The Badgers and Iowa State placed third and fourth, repectively, with 0-1-1 marks.
Despite playing without leading scorer Jenny Kundert who was out with an injury, Wisconsin kept the pressure on the Cornhuskers throughout the match and especially through the second half.
Nebraska took a 1-0 lead at the 26:22 mark. Lindsay Ingram played a cross from the far side following a corner kick. Nikki Baker played Ingram's cross and then flicked a pass to Iman Haynes who was able to jam the ball past UW keeper Stefani Szczechowski.
Each team notched four shots in the opening half, with Wisconsin seeing three go on goal, compared to the one for Nebraska on the goal by Haynes.
The Badgers stayed on the attack following the intermission and had a number of good scoring opportunities, but were unable to tally until the 77:47 mark. Freshman Emily Kintzer scored her second goal in as many games, beating NU keeper Brooke Bredenberg to tie the score 1-1.
With momentum on its side, Wisconsin had chances to take the lead, but Carter's run from midfield with just under two minutes remaining resulted a goal that beat Szczechowski into the upper right corner of the net for the game-winner.
UW outshot Nebraska 8-4 in the second half, putting five on goal as opposed to two for the Cornhuskers. Bredenberg made seven saves for NU, while Szczechowski made one for the Badgers.
Wisconsin returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 when it plays host to Indiana.
Michigan 4, Iowa State 2
Michigan broke out of its scoring slump in a big way Sunday afternoon, as four different Wolverines scored in a 4-2 victory over Iowa State.
Michigan had scored just three goals in its previous five matches so far this season. The victory improved the Wolverines' record to 1-3-2 overall, while Iowa State fell to 2-2-1.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and eventually led by four before the Cyclones scored a pair of late goals. Therese Heaton, Whitney Kjar and Kate Morgan each scored first-half goals, with Robyn Vince assisting on two of the tallies.
Stephanie Chavez, the tournament's offensive MVP, added a goal for Michigan at the 66:18 mark. Jess Villhauer and Deb Benakis recorded goals just under two minutes apart for Iowa State, but the Cyclones would get no closer over the final 13:36 of play.
