Camp Randall Renovation Underway Again
November 17, 2004 | General News
It didn't take long for the bulldozers to begin Phase 2 of the Camp Randall Stadium renovation. Within an hour after the final football game Nov. 6, Breese Terrace was closed to two-way traffic, and the west and east side stadium construction started promptly on Monday.
The main Camp Randall tunnel is a maze of construction vehicles and rubble as the cavernous underside of the east seating area is excavated. The former mailroom and numerous maintenance areas have been reduced to dust among support pillars as the area is cleared to make way for the new training table facility for the athletes. The former rifle range has a new floor and is being converted to a band and seat cushion storage area.
Athletic department staff who occupied offices on the third and fourth floors of Camp Randall Stadium East will be amazed at the deconstruction. The entire fourth floor has been gutted creating one clear space from section Q to section X. Stairwells to the fourth floor have been demolished, and walls on the third floor have also been almost completely removed.
The fourth floor will remain closed off as a mechanicals floor, while the third floor will accommodate new restrooms and renovated concession stands. The narrow four-foot corridor which fans used to negotiate has been widened. Upon completion of the project, the third floor exterior passageway will completely encircle the stadium joining with the main west side walkway to create a major artery to transport fans.
On the west side, the landscape and fence have been removed to create new foundations for additional restrooms and concession stands. The existing restrooms inboard on the west side will be modernized and refitted. A second elevator will be added to the press box as part of a million dollar renovation to that area. A satellite ticket office will also be located on the west side. New fencing that matches the black iron and brick fencing by the Athletic Operations building will eventually be added.
