Women's Basketball Plays Host to SIU Tonight
November 22, 2004 | Women's Basketball
Wisconsin plays host to Southern Illinois tonight at 7 p.m. in the Kohl Center before heading to the Houston Classic Tournament over Thanksgiving. UW had its first opening season win since 2001, and first under second year head coach Lisa Stone with a decisive 82-49 victory over IUPUI on Nov. 19.
A more athletic and offensive-minded UW team has taken the floor this season. Including exhibitions, the Badgers are averaging 78.3 points per game, 21 points more than last season's average of 57.3.
Wisconsin found its rebounding prowess with a 53-41 dominance over IUPUI. Wisconsin also took care of the ball with just two turnovers in the first half, and 10 for the game. The Badgers averaged 17.9 turnovers per game last season.
All 11 UW players played double-digit minutes against IUPUI, and all 11 scored led by the new backcourt duet of freshmen Janese Banks (15 points, seven rebounds) and Jolene Wilson (20 points, 11 rebounds, five assists). Banks returned from injury to start after missing both exhibition games.
In perhaps a preview of the season start, Anderson tied for team scoring honors through the two exhibition games averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 10 rebounds. No UW freshman has ever averaged a double-double.
Junior Jordan Wilson continued to dominate inside with 14 points and nine rebounds versus IUPUI. Ashley Josephson, last year's leading scorer with 12.3 points per game, came off the bench to contribute seven points.
The game can be heard on WTSO AM 1070 or watch the live video stream at uwbadgers.com.
