Ring Named Third-Team Academic All-America
November 24, 2004 | Women's Soccer
University of Wisconsin defender Jessica Ring (Rockford, Ill.) was named by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as ESPN The Magazine third-team Academic All-America, the organization announced yesterday in Waltham, Mass.
Ring, a tri-captain, is one of 10 student-athletes who have a 4.0 GPA on the second and third teams. The junior by eligibility and senior academically was a CoSIDA Academic All-District V selection in 2003 and 2004.
As a key player to UW's 16-6-1 season, which ended in the second round of the NCAA tournament, Ring tallied one goal and one assist and started all 23 matches.
She is the first Wisconsin women's soccer player to earn the honor since Shannon Brown was a second-team pick in 1998.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
