Camp Randall Stadium Renovation Phase 2 In Full Swing
December 21, 2004 | General News
It may be the holiday season elsewhere but it's still the construction season at Camp Randall Stadium. Crews are operating on three sides with fan amenities the No. 1 priority.
The entire third and fourth floors of the stadium's east side have been gutted. More men's and women's restrooms are in the offing, and improved concessions areas are being renovated. The fourth floor, which formerly housed staff offices in its dorm-sized rooms, will serve as a mechanicals area. The walkway has increased in size from four feet to widened corridors that complete the third level interior concourse.
The tunnel which runs the length of the stadium's east side has also been demolitioned. Two new field level portals in sections V and R are being excavated. They will carry the crowd to the field at ground level allowing officials to backload the stadium.
A new training table dining area will be sectioned from the middle of the cavernous former storage areas under the east grandstands. The former Mendota Gridiron meeting room has been gutted and will become additional men's and women's restrooms. Other areas along the tunnel will serve as storage and mechanical areas.
On the field, the north endzone near the field level is being excavated and new seating for the UW band will be built. The existing portals are being widened including gate 15 which is also being lowered so an ambulance can enter the field. The old portal was too shallow to allow emergency vehicles to enter from the north.
On the west side, the footings are being poured for additional restrooms, concessions, a second elevator shaft, and a ticket office. The area along Breese Terrace will eventually be spruced up with a black iron fence that matches the fencing along the practice field.
The work on phase II of the Camp Randall Renovation is going along ahead of schedule, but as with all remodeling projects, can hit a snag now and then. However, the crew is geared toward the August, 2005 completion date for the $108 million renovation with the dedication planned for the opening game with Bowling Green on Sept. 3, 2005.
