Men's Track Competes in Iowa

The University of Wisconsin men's track and field team picked up five NCAA regional qualifying marks at two meets in Iowa. The Badgers competed at the prestigious Drake Relays and the Loras Open.
At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, freshman Demi Omole won the 100 meters in a personal best of 10.29 seconds. The time also improved his regional qualifying time.
Omole also led the Badgers' 4x100-meter relay to a third-place finish. The team of Levonne Rowan, Jvontai Hanserd, Gustin Smith and Omole ran 40.74 in the invitational race. Texas-El Paso won the event in 39.93
Wisconsin also finished third in the sprint medley relay. The team of Chad Melotte (200 meters), Dan Goesch (200), Joe Detmer (400) and Dan Murray (800) crossed in 3:23.72. Alabama won the race in 3:18.83.
Detmer was also fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a regional mark of 52.31.
The Badgers also won seven events at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa, on Saturday.
Freshman Paul Hubbard was a double winner taking the long jump in a personal best and regional qualifying mark of 24-5 3/4. He also won the 100 meters in 10.66 and was third in the triple jump at 46-5 '.
Teammate Rick Bellford won the triple jump at 50-2 and was also second in the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 24-1. He was also third in the 100 meters in 10.88. Sophomore Joe Conway finished third in the long jump at 23-3 '.
Freshman Joe Thomas won the shot put with a personal best of 58-5 3/4. His toss moves him into fourth on the UW all-time list and improves his regional qualifying mark by over a foot. Thomas was also second in the discus at 163-0.
Sophomore Brandon Houle finished third in the shot put at 53-7 ' while redshirt freshman Mike Sracic finished third in the discus (154-0) and fourth in the hammer (160-6).
Other event winners were Jon Mungen in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.45), Ryan Tremelling in the pole vault (15-2 ') and the 4x100-meter relay in 41.36.
In early results from the Oregon Invitational, where the UW distance runners are competing, senior Drew Hohensee finished 12th in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:11.78 while redshirt freshman Codie See finished 16th in 9:17.47. All of the other UW distance runners were competing in the evening session.
