Women's Soccer Loses Another Heartbreaker, 1-0 to Purdue
October 14, 2005 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost another heartbreaker Friday, falling to No. 25 Purdue 1-0 at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Boilermakers scored the game-winner with two minutes left to play in the contest. Junior Lynn Murray had a strong game in the net for the Badgers, posting four saves.
Purdue scored at 88:14. Shauna Stapleton had a solid shot from the ride side that hit the right post and bounced out in front of the net. Parissa Eyorkon was there to gather the ball and her shot sailed into the upper right corner of the net past Murray.
'I am really proud of our team. We have a great team, and once again, it is one more frustrating result,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'We needed to find away to just get one in. It was a battle. Purdue is a great team, and we can play with any team in the country.'
Wisconsin outshot Purdue by a mark of 18-13 in the game, including a 10-4 advantage in the first period. Junior Kara Kabellis (Lockport, Ill.) led the Badgers with four shots in the game, followed by Katy Lindenmuth (Geneva, Ill) and Sandy Jorgensen (Woodbury, Minn.) with three each.
The Badgers also posted a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Murray, who started her second consecutive game after sharing time with Stefani Szczechowski (Plymouth, Mich.), had two big saves inside the 10 minute mark to help bring the game right down to the wire.
'The defense did a great job tonight,' Duerst said. 'Purdue is a strong offensive team and we really shut them down. Lynn was in her game. She showed what she was capable of.'
The game was just the second scoreless game for the Badgers all season, and the sixth (of seven losses) they have dropped by one goal.
'I have faith in this group,' Duerst said. 'They play great soccer. They played awesome tonight. They know what faces them. We have to beat Indiana. The team needs to keep its head up.'
Wisconsin (6-7-2, 1-5-1 Big Ten) plays host to the Hoosiers at 1 p.m. Sunday.
