October 16, 2005 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team was defeated by Indiana 2-1 Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Freshman Elise Weber netted her third career goal for the Badgers.
Wisconsin is 6-8-2 on the year, including a 1-6-1 mark in Big Ten games. There are four remaining games on the regular season schedule, two of which are conference matches.
Indiana (6-5-2, 2-5-0 Big Ten) got on the board first when Molly Kruger scored at 28:19. The Hoosiers would have a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Wisconsin had another strong showing out of the box in the second half and were able to tie the game at one at 74:17. Weber (Elk Grove, Ill.) scored from the left side following an assist from teammate Marisa Brown (Evanston, Ill.).
'It was a game of two halves,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'We didn't really play as a team in the first half. It was not one of our best halves. We did not create enough chances. In the second half, we came out and the effort was there. We had numerous chances to score. It comes down to finishing.'
The game would be knotted at one for less than three minutes. Indiana retook the lead at 76:49 when Kristen Zmigjewski converted for the game-winner after gathering the rebound from a previous shot.
The loss was the second straight for the Badgers. Seven of the team 's eight losses have been by one goal.
'I believe in this team,' Duerst said. 'I have a lot of faith in them. These guys have to believe. There are two more games left that could potentially make our season.'
The Badgers will travel to UW-Green Bay Thursday for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Phoenix. Wisconsin will play host to Ohio State at 1 p.m. next Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
