Wisconsin to Host In-State Rival Marquette
October 18, 2005 | Men's Soccer
The Wisconsin men's soccer team (4-9-0, 0-3-0 Big Ten Conference) begins the final stretch of the regular season Wednesday at the McClimon Soccer Complex vs. in-state rival Marquette (5-6-1, 1-5-1 Big East). The Badgers will host three of the last five games on the schedule. Wednesday's game will kick off at 7 p.m.
The Badgers broke their scoring slump finding the back of the net twice in Oct. 14's bout with 2004 National Champion Indiana. Though losing the game 5-2, the Badgers were even with the Hoosiers, 2-2, at halftime. Wisconsin had scored just two goals in the six games prior to the IU game.
With a 13-9-6 all-time record vs. the Golden Eagles, Wisconsin hopes to continue its climb in the offensive categories. This season's points leaders are juniors Reid Johnson with seven (3-1=7) and Aaron Hohlbein with six (2-2=6). Close behind are sophomores Dirk Pearson (2-1=5), Sho Fujita (2-0=4), Erik Ortega (1-2=4) and redshirt freshman Victor Diaz (2-0=4).
By comparison, the leading scorers for Marquette, Blair Kohlmeyer and Duncan Silvert-Noftle, have registered just four points apiece this season. The team as a whole has scored just seven goals thus far.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 1-0 win at home vs. UW-Green Bay and a fruitless road trip to Providence where the game was cancelled due to rain and poor field conditions.
The Badgers are looking to break another slump, their seven-game losing streak. The UW has not lost to the Golden Eagles since 2002 marking 2-1 and 5-3 wins the last two seasons. Behind a hat trick from Jed Hohlbein, the UW used last season 's game to complete a sweep of the Division I Wisconsin schools (UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay and Marquette).
Wisconsin will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a noon game vs. the Wolverines on Sunday before finishing out its home schedule with Big Ten games vs. Michigan State (Oct. 30) and UW-Green Bay (Nov. 2). Live stats will be available on uwbadgers.com at all home contests with game summaries and stats posted after the contest.
