Season Ends for Wisconsin Women's Soccer
November 11, 2005 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team was defeated by No. 12 Marquette 1-0 Friday in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
The only score of the game came at 36:46 when Katie Kelly scored off a free kick following a Wisconsin foul. Kelly's shot from the right side was deflected by Murray but the ball had already crossed the endline.
Trailing by one throughout the second half, Wisconsin continued to battle. After being held to no shots in the first half, the Badgers outshot the Golden Eagles 7-5 in the second period.
'I would have thought we would have had a lot more chances on goal, more opportunities,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'That is part of athletics. We didn't just didn't do what we do best. We had some chances but we didn't run early enough.'
Amy Vermeulen paced Wisconsin with three shots.
Marquette's Laura Boyer had a solid outing in the net. She finished with two saves on the night.
The match marked the final game for six Wisconsin seniors: captain Marisa Brown, Erin Dubina, Becky Katsma, captain Katy Lindenmuth, captain Jessica Ring and captain Amy Vermeulen.
'They are all special,' Duerst said. 'They have given so much. The thing about them is they will be very proud of their days at Wisconsin.'
Wisconsin finishes the year with a 13-9-2 mark. The squad won its second Big Ten tournament championship and made its 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament.
