Aloha from Badgers in Hawaii
November 23, 2005 | Women's Basketball
The Wisconsin football and women's basketball travel party of 220 left Madison at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday in search of victories in Hawaii. The football team meets the Warriors in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2 on Friday at 8 p.m. CST. The UW women's basketball team is taking part in the eight-team Rainbow Wahini Classic. Its first game is also Friday at 1 p.m. CST (9 a.m. local time).
For the next several days, UW athletic communications staff members will post the day's happenings accompanied by photos of both groups preparing for their respective contests.
Day 1 ' Travel Day
After four hours of flying from Madison and an hour lay-over in San Francisco to refuel, the group flew the final five hours to Honolulu. A traditional lei greeting awaited the Badgers upon their arrival at 5 p.m. Hawaiian time (9 p.m. CST). The football team went immediately to Aloha Stadium for a light workout. The remainder of the travel party, which consists of the women's basketball team, spouses of the coaching staff and support personnel, traveled to the hotel on Waikiki Beach.
The long flight was made more comfortable by several meals, and three movies. The morning movie was 'Ray,' and the afternoon shows were 'War of the Worlds' and 'Caddyshack..' For those who had already seen the shows, there was sleep, reading, studying, and card playing.
The teams and coaching staffs get along great. The Badgers were not hard to spot at the San Francisco airport with our matching red travel sweats. I'm sure there were more than a few travelers trying to guess our business as these hulking men and tall women wandered through their midst.
Following football practice and team dinner, the group met for a police briefing and then it was to bed after the long travel day.
Watch for a report on Wednesday activities, which includes practice for both teams, a tour of Pearl Harbor, followed by our own Thanksgiving Dinner at the hotel involving the entire travel party.
