Wisconsin Headed to Milwaukee
November 07, 2005 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (13-8-2) is headed to Milwaukee for the first and second rounds of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA women's soccer selection committee announced Monday. The Badgers will face off against Marquette in the first round Friday. The Golden Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the bracket.
'We know that Marquette has had a great year,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'This is a match up we hoped to have during the regular season. We know the team and we know what to expect. We have been trying to use every little positive thing the last couple of weeks. This team believes in itself. '
Wisconsin is one of five Big Ten teams in the field this year. Penn State, Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois also were invited.
Ironically, Purdue will match up with UW-Milwaukee at Marquette in the upper half of the bracket. If Wisconsin beats Marquette, it will face the UWM-Purdue winner Sunday at time to be announced.
Wisconsin is coming off its second Big Ten tournament title in school history. The Badgers also will carry a seven-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament.
The Badgers are making their 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament. Wisconsin and Marquette have met once before in the tournament. Wisconsin defeated the Golden Eagles 3-2 in the first round of the 2002 tournament. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.
