UW Food and Beverage Earns Community Service Recognition
December 25, 2005 | General News
Porchlight, a nonprofit, volunteer agency that helps the homeless, honored recently the University of Wisconsin food & beverage department for its food donations. In addition, UW cook Bob Muir III was recognized in November for overcoming homelessness.
'The community supports us so much, and this is just one small way we can give back to them,' Wisconsin suites manager Blair Schmitz said. 'Bob helped us understand what Porchlight has done, and he has been instrumental in the food donations.'
Through Porchlight's services, Muir was able to get help with his alcoholism and find a job with Badger Athletics. Over the past year, he and chefs Herbert Hackworthy and A.J. Klein have donated daily leftovers from training table meals to Porchlight.
That has helped Porchlight immensely reduce its food budget because of the large amount of meals it receives from UW, Schmitz said.
Porchlight strives to decrease the Dane County homeless population by providing shelter, housing, supportive services and a sense of community in ways that empower residents and program participants to positively shape their lives. For more information, please visit www.porchlightinc.org .
