Wisconsin Rolls Over Minnesota, 5-1
October 01, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (5-4-2, 2-2-0 Big Ten) scored four goals in the second half in a come-from-behind 5-1 win over border battle rival Minnesota Sunday in Minneapolis. Sheri Ferron led the Badgers with two scores on the day.
Wisconsin's five goals are the most this season. The previous high was three scores against Creighton in the season-opener. Additionally, Ferron, who scored in her third consecutive game, was the first Badger this year to tally a multi-goal game.
'It was an offensive explosion,' Dean Duerst, UW head coach, said. 'We really came together as a team and players stepped up today. Our forwards and attackers really played their roles well. They combined well, ran off the ball and crashed the goal. One of the things we have learned from previous games is to crash the goal and put pressure on the other team.'
Other UW goals came from Kara Kabellis, Allison Preiss and Elise Weber. Preiss' score was her first of the year.
Junior keeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) tallied six saves in the net for Wisconsin and earned her third win of 2006.
Wisconsin outshot the Gophers 22-11 in the match, including a 12-5 margin in the second half. Weber (Elk Grove, Ill.) led the Badgers with six shots, three of which were on goal. Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) also added four shots.
Minnesota (6-5-1, 0-4-0 Big Ten) came out of the gate strong and took a quick 1-0 lead when Kaitlin Wagner scored in the third minute.
Wisconsin tied the game late in the second half when Kabellis (Lockport, Ill.) recorded her third goal of the year at 30:03. Kabellis was inside the box and kicked it past Gopher keeper Chelsey Turner to the far post. Weber was credited with the assist.
'The important thing for us was to tie the game in the first half,' Duerst said. 'We also made a tactical adjustment that helped us more in the second half.'
In the second period, the Badgers amazingly scored four times in less than 15 minutes. Wisconsin wasted no time out of the gate and scored its second goal 27 seconds into the stanza to take the lead. After a Ferron shot was deflected inside the box, Preiss gathered the ball and fired it to the back of the net.
The next UW goal game in the 49th minute, when Ferron netted her first of two scores, with sophomore Taylor Walsh (Madison, Wis.) earning the assist.
Weber then recorded her second goal of the year in the 54th minute off a rebounded goalie save. Ferron would conclude the scoring in the 60th minute with her fourth goal of the year. Ann Eshun (Madison, Wis.) took a free kick that Ferron put in for the score.
'We were really on and made a lot happen,' Duerst said. 'We also did a good job of locking in on the Minnesota counter-attack.'
The women's soccer program will officially celebrate its 25th season next weekend. The Badgers play host to Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
