October 13, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (6-5-3, 3-3-1 Big Ten) fell to 16th-ranked Indiana 1-0 Friday in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers, who currently top the Big Ten standings, scored in the 66th minute.
The shutout was just the second of the year for Wisconsin and the first in 12 games.
After a scoreless first half in which the shots were tied at three apiece and the Badgers had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks but were unable to score.
The Hoosiers (9-2-4, 5-0-1 Big Ten) were able to get one to go in the second stanza when Jessica Boots scored for the first time this season, a header off a long cross from teammate Lauren Lamping.
'It was a frustrating loss because we were shutout,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'We played a tremendous first half and had opportunities to score but never found the back of the net. Both teams fought hard. It wasn 't our best game overall yet we were right in it.'
Indiana finished the contest with 11 shots to Wisconsin's eight, three of which were on goal. Senior Kara Kabellis (Lockport, Ill.) led the Badgers with three shots.
UW junior goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) tallied six saves in the net. It was just her second loss of the year.
'In the second half we didn't play as a team,' Duerst said. 'We were our heels a little bit and made a little mistake that cost us the game. Indiana is a team right now that is finding ways to win. We didn't create enough danger, especially being down a goal.'
Wisconsin is back in action at 1 p.m. (noon central) Sunday at Purdue.
