This Week in Badger Athletics
October 02, 2006 | General News
The men's hockey team returns to the ice, the women's soccer team celebrates its 25th season and a number is retired this week in Badger athletics.
The 2006 NCAA national champion men's hockey team opens its title defense on the road against Northern Michigan Friday and Saturday at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
The program stands 10 wins shy of 1,000 for the modern era (since 1963). Head coach Mike Eaves returns All-American goaltender Brian Elliott and 2006-07 preseason All-American Kyle Klubertanz. Senior forward Andrew Joudrey serves as team captain, while defenseman Jeff Likens and senior forward Jake Dowell serve as assistant captains.
The UW women's soccer program will officially celebrate its 25th anniversary as a varsity sport this weekend in Madison. More than 100 former and current players and staff will come together for three days of festivities, highlighted by a reception at the Kohl Center Saturday night in a reunion put on by the National W Club.
The celebration begins at 7 p.m. Friday when the team plays host to Michigan at the McClimon Soccer Complex in a rematch of the 2005 Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Badgers stand 5-4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Head coach Dean Duerst needs one win to give him 150 for his career.
Wisconsin will officially recognize the retired number (80) of All-America end Dave Schreiner at halftime of this Saturday's football game between Wisconsin and Northwestern at Camp Randall Stadium. Schreiner played for the Badgers' famous 1942 team and later was killed during World War II.
The Badgers (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) return home after a two-game road trip and will host the Wildcats (2-3, 0-1) for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The game pits the two youngest Division I-A coaches against each other in Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema (36) and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald (31). NU won last year's meeting, 51-48, in Evanston, Ill.
UW quarterback John Stocco was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Week for his role in a 52-17 victory over Indiana Saturday. Stocco completed 15-of-17 passes for 304 yards and three scores. His pass efficiency rating for the game was 296.7, a school-record.
The UW volleyball team will have its eight-match Big Ten winning streak tested this weekend on the road. The 14th-ranked Badgers travel to 13th-ranked Ohio State Friday and to second-ranked Penn State Saturday. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
Wisconsin and Penn State are two of three teams on top of the Big Ten standings at 4-0. Ohio State lost to Penn State (3-0) and nationally-ranked Purdue (3-1) and is tied for fifth in the conference standings at 2-2.
The first-place men's soccer team (6-3-2, 2-0-1) is unbeaten in three Big Ten games for the first time since 1996. The Badgers host Western Illinois Wednesday before continuing league play Sunday at Ohio State. Senior goalkeeper Jake Settles has posted three consecutive shutouts and has not allowed a goal in his last 346 minutes played.
Making their season debuts this weekend are the Wisconsin men's and women 's swimming and diving teams. The squads are hosting their only meet of this semester Friday against UW-Green Bay at the Natatorium. The women's team ended last season ranked No. 12 and is captained by Susan Johnson and Jackie Vavrek. The men 's team is captained by Tom Molzahn and Tommy Gregory.
