No. 9 Penn State Beats Wisconsin 3-0
October 20, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (6-7-3, 3-5-1 Big Ten) were beaten by ninth-ranked Penn State 3-0 Friday in University Park, Pa. The loss sent the Badgers under the .500 mark for the first time this season.
'The result did not go our way today,' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'We played a superb first half and another great 20 minutes in the second half. But against Penn State, you just cannot make one mistake.'
Penn State has recorded shutouts in its past five matches, all Big Ten contests.
The Badgers played an excellent first half and the game remained scoreless at the half. Both teams took three shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
Unfortunately, the Lady Lions (11-3-3, 7-1-1 Big Ten) took advantage of Wisconsin mistakes and scored three goals within eight minutes of play. The first score came in the 67th minute when defender Ali Kreiger broke free at midfield and fired a shot from 20 yards out to the far left post.
In the 74th minute, a UW foul in the box gave Penn State a penalty kick that got past Badge keeper Lynn Murray. Two minutes later, the Lady Lions tallied their third and final goal on a score by Aubrey Aden-Buie, her ninth of the year. Aden-Buie scored on a cross from teammate Jaime Morrison.
Wisconsin was outshot by Penn State 7-3 in the second half. Both teams took four corner kicks in the match.
'I was really proud of our team,' Duerst continued. 'We had a couple dangerous corners and we needed one or two quality chances. We got them but we didn 't stick it in. I am proud of the way we fought and battled.'
Wisconsin will play at in-state rival UW-Milwaukee at noon Sunday. The final home game of the year will take place next Friday against Northwestern at the McClinom Soccer Complex.
'Right now, these last two games, we need two big results,' Duerst said. 'Our team is looking forward to it. They know there is so much on the line. '
