Where are they now' Amy Hultgren
October 20, 2006 | Volleyball
As the 11th-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team gets ready to play at the University of Iowa on Saturday, we look back at former Badger and Iowa native Amy Hultgren. The Badgers take on the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The match will be air live on WTSO (AM 1070) in Madison.
For Hultgren, playing volleyball at the University of Wisconsin was a dream come true. The 6-3 middle blocker transferred to Wisconsin prior to her junior season after playing two years at the University of Texas. The Spencer, Iowa, native was a member of the 2001 Big Ten Conference championship team, ranking second on the team in blocks. As a senior in 2002, Hultgren led the team in blocks and hitting percentage. She earned two all-tournament honors with the Badgers.
Where are you living and working now'
I am living in Vermillion, S.D., and working at the University of South Dakota athletic department as the coordinator of athletic marketing and promotions.
How has your academic experience or your degree from the UW assisted you in your chosen career'
The experience I gained and people I met working as an intern for the UW Athletic Ticket Office after I graduated has been very valuable to me as I begin a career in collegiate athletics.
What do you remember most about Wisconsin Volleyball'
Winning the Big Ten Conference (I had never won anything before that.) and game days at the Field House, with the awesome fans and UW Band. Also, I think about playing on the road and how our travel vans always seemed to get lost at least once a trip.
How has your athletic experience at the UW affected your life'
It affects my life in a million different ways, but the top two are probably the connections and friendships that I'll have forever and how it has led me and assisted me down a career path that I love.
What do you remember most, academically or socially, about your collegiate years at the UW'
I have such good memories of just hanging out with friends, whether it was at the Terrace or going to basketball games or whatever it was.
What do you think of the Wisconsin volleyball tradition and legacy'
When people hear 'Wisconsin Volleyball,' they just expect to hear about big accomplishments and a top level of performance because the team competes at the highest level season after season. It's really something that all the coaches, players and supporters should be very proud of.
What advice would you give the current players'
Compete hard and give it all you got when it's time, but also remember to keep a balance of different priorities in life.
Do you get back to Madison often' Or keep up with how the team is doing now '
It's been over a year and I am dying to get over there soon. But I usually am pretty aware of how the team is doing.
