Wisconsin Earns No. 7 Seed
October 28, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (7-8-3, 4-5-1 Big Ten) has earned the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten tournament, the conference office announced Saturday. The Badgers will play No. 2 Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in University Park, Pa.
Wisconsin will look to defend its 2005 conference tournament title, which the Badgers claimed as a No. 7 seed a year ago. UW defeated No. 2 Purdue (3-0), No. 3 Michigan State (2-1) and No. 8 Michigan (3-1) to claim the crown.
The Badgers, who had dropped their previous four matches, posted an emotional 5-0 win over Northwestern Friday to secure seventh place in the conference standings and a Big Ten tournament berth.
The Fighting Illini, who defeated the Badgers 4-1 earlier in the season, went 8-2 in Big Ten games this year.
Penn State earned the No. 1 seed for the ninth consecutive year. The Lady Lions, who are playing host to the event, finished with an 8-1-1 mark in conference play.
If the Badgers defeat Illinois, the squad will face the No. 3 Purdue-No. 6 Ohio State winner at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The championship match will be played at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Jeffery Field.
