
UW Finishes Ninth at Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational

The University of Wisconsin women's golf team took ninth place Tuesday at the 2006 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. The Badgers finished with a three-round score of 950 (324-313-313) at the 6,232-yard, par-72 Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
The host school, Kansas, won the tournament with a score 917 (304-306-307).
UW's top-finisher was junior Katie Elliott who finished the tournament tied for 6th place. The Madison, Wis., native followed up her first-round 81 with a one-over par 73 in the second, and three-over par 75 in the third to finish the tournament with a 229. Elliott finished only 8 strokes behind tournament champion Anita Ojeda of Arkansas-Little Rock who shot a 221 (72-77-72).
Sophmores Jeanna Dahl (Fargo, N.D.) and Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) finished 33rd and tied for 42nd, respectively. Dahl finished with a total score of 239 (81-76-82) while Alvarez finished with a 244 (78-84-82).
Two other Badgers, Kelsey Verbeten and Jill Ries (Middleton, Wis.) both finished at 29-over par and tied for 45th place with a score of 245. Verbeten, the Green Bay, Wis., native, shot an 84 in the first round, a second-round 82 and a 79 in the final round. Ries came back with a 77 in the tournament's final day after shooting a first-round 86 and a second-round 82 on Monday.
The UW women's golfers are back in action next Monday as they will play in the Legends of Indiana being played at Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind.
