Wisconsin Ties Michigan 1-1
October 06, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (5-4-3, 2-2-1 Big Ten) tied Michigan 1-1 Friday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Senior Allison Preiss scored her second goal of the year to lead the Badgers.
Priess tied the game at one in the 72nd minute when Ann Eshun took a free kick that Kara Kabellis passed on to Preiss. Preiss shot from her left foot to the far post past Michigan keeper Megan Turra.
Each team took a shot in both the first and second overtimes but neither team was able to pull out a win. In the 109th minute, Elise Weber (Elk Grove, Ill.) was fouled and a Michigan player received a yellow card. The foul occurred close to the penalty box, but a direct kick was instead lined up just outside of it. Kabellis took the shot but it sailed over the net.
Amy Klippert of Michigan received a red card in the 90th minute of play and the Wolverines were a man down for both overtime sessions.
Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) led Wisconsin with three shots. Kabellis (Lockport, Ill.), Weber and Sandy Jorgensen (Woodbury, Minn.) each tallied two shots.
Junior Lynn Murray had another solid outing in the net with three saves, all in the second half.
Michigan got on the board first in the 16th minute when Judy Coffman put it past Murray on an assist from Melissa Dobbyn.
The Badgers had an excellent chance to tie the game in the 21st minute when Sheri Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.) fired a shot taken from a Weber cross but the ball went over the crossbar.
Wisconsin had two more close scores in the 86th and 88th minute, respectively. A Kabellis header off a corner kick went wide left and another solid attempt by Ferron had too much power.
The Badgers are back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Michigan State. It will be the last game at home before the team embarks on a four-game road trip.
