Duerst Earns Career Win 150
October 08, 2006 | Women's Soccer
Head coach Dean Duerst earned his 150th win at Wisconsin Sunday as the women's soccer team (6-4-3, 3-2-0 Big Ten) shut out Michigan State 3-0. Sophomore Taylor Walsh led Wisconsin with two goals.
Duerst is in his 13th season at the helm and is already the program's winningest coach. His 150th career victory came just one day after the women's soccer team celebrated its 25th anniversary as a varsity sport.
'One of the things about the whole weekend was it brought back a lot of memories,' Duerst said. 'I saw a lot of faces and heard lots of stories. I encouraged our team today to honor those past players. We outworked Michigan State. The way they showed their pride was what mattered the most.'
Wisconsin got on the board early with a goal in the sixth minute. After a restart, junior Ann Eshun struck the ball and Kara Kabellis flicked it over the Michigan State keeper. It was Kabellis' (Lockport, Ill.) fourth goal of the season.
The Badgers struck again in the 13th minute when Walsh (Madison, Wis.) scored her first of two goals. Off a throw-in taken by Allison Preiss, Sheri Ferron took the pass and served it to the back post where Walsh put it through.
In the 16th minute, Wisconsin made it 3-0. Walsh tallied her fifth goal of the year and was once again assisted by both Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.) and Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.). Ferron served the ball up towards the net and Spartan keeper Nicole Galas came out to get it. The ball instead deflected off Galas and Walsh was there to strike it past her.
Remarkably, Wisconsin's first three shots of the game were all goals.
The Spartans (5-7-1, 1-4-0 Big Ten) had an 8-6 shot advantage in the first half. Just four total shots were taken in the second stanza, two by each team. The Badgers took five corner kicks to Michigan State's one.
Junior goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) had another solid outing in the net, recording her third shutout of the year. Murray, who finished with six saves, is 4-1-1 in goal for the Badgers.
Additionally, redshirt freshmen Gina Aguglia (Naperville, Ill.), Megan Strohm (Madison, Wis.) and Kelly Delaney (Spring, Texas) saw their first action as Badgers Sunday.
Wisconsin hits the road for a four-game road trip which begins Friday at Indiana. The Hoosiers currently are on top of the Big Ten standings.
