November 02, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The seventh-seeded Wisconsin women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to second-seeded Illinois Thursday in the Big Ten tournament. The Badgers finish the 2006 season with an overall record of 7-9-3.
Illinois scored twice in the first period and once in the second to claim the win. The Illini also outshot Wisconsin 11-8. Senior Allison Preiss led the Badgers with three shots, two of which were on goal.
'Against a team like Illinois, you just have to be on the entire game, ' Dean Duerst, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'We gave up some fouls that led to some scoring chances for them. But we got some quality wins this year. We wish our seniors well.'
After a collision between Natalie Horner and Ella Masar, Illinois was given a free kick from about 15 yards out. Eva Strickland took the shot and flew it past UW keeper Stefeani Szczechowski. The Illini took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Less than three minutes later, Illinois went up 2-0 when Ella Masar headed the ball in from five yards about following a cross from Stickland. The Fighting Illini took a two-goal lead into halftime.
In the second half, Chichi Nweke scored the third goal for Illinois off a pass from Jessica Levitt.
Szczechowksi closed her career with two saves in the net for Wisconsin. Lindsey Carstens had six stops for Illinois.
