UW Leads Big Ten Schools in Fall Sports
December 22, 2006 | General News
With five top-three finishes for its sports this fall, the University of Wisconsin sits atop the Big Ten Conference in the all-sports standings, an unofficial poll conducted by UW.
Wisconsin averaged a rating of 8.92 points for its six fall sports'men 's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and football. Divided by gender, the Badgers averaged 10.0 points per sport to lead the standings on the men's side, while the women are second with 7.83 points per sport.
Points are awarded as follows: 11 points for a conference championship (regular season standing if no places are awarded in the championship or no championship is held) all the way down to one point for 11th place (split points for ties). That total is then divided by the number of Big Ten sports in which a school competed (thus, ice hockey is not counted).
The Badgers earned the bulk of their points from their conference championship in men 's cross country, plus second-place showings in football, men's soccer and women's cross country.
