UW Golfers Finish Strong in WSGA State Amateur Championship

Wisconsin senior-to-be Garrett Jones recorded 14 birdies, including four in his final round 72 Thursday, on his way to a third-place finish in the 105th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at the Mascoutin Golf Club in Berlin, Wis.
The Rewey, Wis. native birdied the 16th and had pars on holes 17 and 18 as he finished just two strokes behind the eventual champion. Last season Jones led the Badgers in season scoring average with a 73.08 while competing in all 36 of the team 's rounds.
The leader board featured the names of five other Badger golfers including two in the top 20. Patrick Duffy (Appelton, Wis.), who will be a sophomore in the fall, was the Badgers' second highest finisher as he ended the tournament tied for 11th place. Duffy finished 12 strokes behind the leader and shot 13 birdies including two in his final round of 77.
Sophomore-to-be Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) joined Duffy near the top of the pack. Obermueller, who held the team's fourth best scoring average last season with a 75.40, shot a 298 (73-77-72-76) and finished tied for 18th.
Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) finished tied for 24th as he shot two consecutive rounds of 76 on Monday and Tuesday. Kaiser improved with a 75 on Wednesday and a 2-over par 74 in the tournament's final round yesterday.
Madison native and senior-to-be Adam Steinhofer shot an impressive 68 in the tournament's first round including an eagle on 14. Steinhofer finished 14-over par and tied for 28th place.
Rounding out the leaders for UW were freshmen-to-be Austin Ehlenfeldt (Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) who finished tied for 40th and 45th, respectively.
