September 12, 2006 | Men's Golf
Three Badgers finished in the top 10 to help the Wisconsin men's golf team win the Mid Pines Intercollegiate at Pinehurst Golf Course in Pinehurst, N.C. on Tuesday with a total score of 847.
UW's total score, which was two strokes ahead of second place Old Dominion, ranks as the second best 54-hole score in school history.
After the first day of the tournament the Badgers shot scores of 282 and 280 and were in second place, two strokes behind the leader. On the final 18 holes, UW shot a third-round best 285 and earned their first tournament victory since winning the Northern Intercollegiate at University Ridge in Sept. of 2004.
Leading the way for Wisconsin was junior Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) who rallied back from being tied for eighth place after the first day to shoot a career best 54-hole total with a seven-under par 209 (70-70-69).
Sophmore Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), a new and welcome addition to the Badger squad, finished the tournament in eighth place with an impressive four-under par 216 total (70-69-73). Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.) followed up a first-round best 66 with a 75 and 72. He finished the tournament with a total score of 213 and earned 9th place.
Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and Adam Steinhofer (Madison, Wis.) rounded out the scoring for UW. Obermueller followed his first round score of 76 with two consecutive one-under par 71 rounds. He finished the tournament with a final score of 218 and a tie for 24th. Steinhofer shot a 78-70-76-224 to earn a tie for 55th.
It is a quick turnaround for the Badgers as they head to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Invitational Sept. 16-17.
