Wisconsin Earn 300th Program Victory
September 24, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team (4-3-2, 1-1-0 Big Ten) notched the program's 300th win Sunday with a 1-0 win over Iowa 1-0 at the McClimmon Soccer Complex.
Upon further video review after the game, it was determined that newcomer Sheri Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.) scored the game's only goal in the 73rd minute. The ball was crossed in front of the net by Ferron, and it first appeared that senior Allison Preiss defelcted the ball alongside an Iowa defender. But further review showed that the ball went untouched and past the Iowa keeper.
The women's soccer team, celebrating its 25th season as a varsity sport, tallied win No. 300 against the Hawkeyes. Meanwhile, head coach Dean Duerst needs just two more wins for 150 career victories as the Badger mentor.
'The 300 win mark is really neat especially with the 25 year reunion this year, ' Duerst sad. 'Our program has really made a name for itself. '
Kara Kabellis (Lockport, Ill.) and Preiss each had two shots on goal as the Badger offense tested the Hawkeye defenders all day. The Badgers outshot the Hawkeyes 11-3, while goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) recorded her second shutout and second win in three games in net for the Badgers.
'Getting our first Big Ten win of the season really helps take some of that weight off the shoulders and puts us in a good position for the rest of the conference season,' Duerst said. 'We now have some momentum heading into the rest of the schedule and I feel that with a little more work, we should be a tough team. '
The Badgers hit the road for their next two games at Ohio State Friday and border battle rival Minnesota Sunday.
