Sophmore Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.) shot a final-round 67 to win the 54-hole VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout Tuesday at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, VA.
Woltman, who led every round of the tournament, finished three strokes ahead of Kent State's Marc Bourgeois to win his first collegiate tournament. Woltman 's14-under par 202 (65-70-67) is the second lowest 54-hole score in Wisconsin history behind only Ben Walter who shot a 200 (65-65-70) at the 1994 Big Ten Championships.
The Badgers finished the tournament with a 2-under par 286 in the final round to claim fifth place. Wisconsin's score of 857 (286-285-286) is the eighth-best 54-hole score in school history. This marks the third time this season that the Badgers have recorded one of the top-10 54-hole scores in UW history.
Rounding out the top-10 for Wisconsin was senior Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.). Jones tied his season best individual total with a six-under par 210 (71-69-70) and finished eighth.
Junior Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) finished tied for 30th place with a 220 (72-73-75). Sophmore Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) shot a 78 in the first round and followed up with two consecutive rounds of 74 to finish with a 226 and a tie for 51st place.
Sophmore Pat Duffy (Appleton, Wis.) also contributed by finishing tied for 62nd place after shooting a 229 (79-73-77).
The Badgers look to continue their impressive fall season in Memphis, Tenn., when they compete in the Memphis Intercollegiate Oct. 2-3.
