Krombach Nets Two, UW Shuts Out Ramblers, 3-0
October 11, 2007 | Women's Soccer
Junior Tricia Krombach tallied two goals, while Marissa Sarkesian added two assists en route to a Wisconsin women's soccer 3-0 victory over non-conference foe Loyola University Chicago Thursday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. UW improved to 5-6-1 overall after ending Loyola's (8-6-5) six-game winning streak. Head coach Paula Wilkins and the Badgers are now 4-2-0 at home.
'The team has bought into our defense and we've continuously talked about a team effort all over the field,' Wilkins said. 'Defending starts with our forwards and we have started to do that more often and that has made me proud of this team. Our girls came out and played hard tonight and it's always great to get a win at McClimon.'
Despite cool temperatures, the Badgers started the match on fire when their first and eventual game-winning goal came in the third minute of play. Sarkesian (Canton, Mich.) took a corner kick from the right side, which fell to the head of defender Shannon Terry (Long Lake, Minn.). Terry then headed the ball directly to the foot of Krombach (Appleton, Wis.) who tipped the ball into the back of the net, giving the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
At the 16-minute mark, UW again beat Loyola's defense and capitalized on another scoring opportunity. Sarkesian passed the ball across to Krombach who gained control before striking it past Loyola netminder Colleen Dougherty. The goal was Krombach 's third of the season and her first multi-goal game of her career. The score gave the Badgers a 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Wisconsin's third goal came in the 83rd minute when Terry made a sliding tackle stealing the ball from a Loyola defender. Gaining possession of the ball, Terry then passed it off to Ferron who was open in front of the net. Ferron sent the ball past Dougherty lifting the score to a final 3-0 in favor of the home team.
'I was very proud of Sheri to be calm and collected at the end of the game and to finish it with a goal,' Wilkins said.
UW out-shot Loyola 15-to-7 and took six corner kicks compared to Loyola's had three. Ferron led the Badgers with four shots, three of which were on goal, with one able to find the back of the net. Terry and sophomore Krista Liskevych (Encinitas, Calif.) both recorded three shots in the game. Krombach notched two shots, both of which she was able to score on.
Badger goalkeeper Jamie Klages (Coronado, Calif.) tallied two saves and had her fifth shutout of the season.
Up next the UW women's soccer team travels to Champaign, Ill., Sunday, Oct. 14 to take on Big Ten rival the Fighting Illini.
