UW to Play in Elite West Coast Invite
October 14, 2007 | Men's Golf
Wisconsin's jam-packed October continues on Monday when the Badgers participate in The Prestige at PGA West. The two-day competition will consist of 54 holes on the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course in La Quinta, Calif.
'At this tournament we will see a really strong field of teams on a very challenging golf course, so this will be a great opportunity for our guys,' head coach Jim Schuman said. 'We will face some of the best teams in the country, including Stanford, last year's national champions, along with other top teams from the West Coast. It should be an exciting week.'
UW will send the same five players to compete this week as it has in its previous two tournaments. This means that Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), Danny Zimmerman (Middleton, Wis.), Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.), Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) will make the trip to the West Coast.
'Our guys have been fairly consistent and have shown steady improvement, ' Schuman said. 'Overall we've seen solid play from our active players, so this week, we're going to stick with the same five guys that we 've played with in our last two competitions. `
The first two rounds of 18 holes will be shot on Monday with the final 18 played on Tuesday. As is typical, only the lowest four scores from each team will count towards the overall team scores.
The Badgers will be paired with UC Davis and Texas Christian on Monday. Stanford, the invite's defending champion and also the defending national champion, will be present at The Prestige. Other teams participating in the competition will be California, UC Irvine, Central Florida, Charlotte, Colorado, Denver, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Pacific, Pepperdine and San Diego, making up a total of 16 teams.
The two-day Prestige at PGA West starts at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, and will be played in La Qunita, Calif., at Greg Norman Course.
