November 30, 2007 | Volleyball
Iowa State (18-13) upset No. 16 San Diego (21-8) in five games (25-30, 31-29, 30-19, 24-30 and 16-14) to advance to the second round against the winner of the Wisconsin/Northern Iowa game.
'This was a great match between two teams who would not let go,' said Iowa State's head coach Christy Johnson. 'We've had to win some tough five-gamers recently and we could have let go after that first game. We played with pressure tonight and were able to execute.'
Iowa State advances to the second round of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year.
'(Advancing to the second round) is exciting and I contribute this to the great senior leadership,' said Johnson.
San Diego's Amy DeGroot led all hitters with 20 kills. The Toreros had three hitters with double-digit kills. Laurel Abrahmson had 16 and Ali Troost had 15. The Cyclones had four players in double digits and were led by Lauren Cummings and Victoria Henson, who each tallied 18 kills in the match. Jen Malcom had 13 kills and Erin Boeve contributed ten kills of her own.
Both teams had a team hitting percentage of .198 and recorded seven service aces. However, San Diego narrowly outblocked Iowa State 19.5 to 18 but the Cyclones outdug the Toreros 78 to 77.
Iowa State will face the winner of the Wisconsin/Northern Iowa match at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the UW Field House.
