December 13, 2007 | Men's Hockey
Wisconsin freshman forward Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C.) is one of the 22 players named to Canada's national junior team roster, Hockey Canada announced on Thursday. Turris and Team Canada will compete in the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship set for Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in the Czech Republic.
Turris joins NAV=AF&ID="> --> Team USA members Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Jamie McBain (Faribault, Minn.) as current Badgers who will compete in the under-20 tournament.
Turris, the UW's leading scorer with seven goals and 19 points through 16 games, skated for Team Canada at the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series in September where he led all scorers with seven goals. The No. 3 overall draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in last summer's NHL draft, Turris will miss the Badger Hockey Showdown and the UW's Jan 4-5 home series against Colorado College while playing in the tournament.
Current Badger freshman defenseman Brendan Smith (Mimico, Ontario) took part on Team Canada's tryout camp that began on Monday, but was one of 13 players released from the team earlier on Thursday.
