September 13, 2007 | Men's Golf
The UW men's golf team will compete for the second straight week when it heads north to Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2007 Gopher Invitational played at Spring Hill Golf Club. The tournament will begin on Saturday, Sept. 15, and conclude the following day on Sept. 16.
Head coach Jim Schuman and his team are looking forward to the competition.
'This is our first really big event of the year and the team is really excited to participate,' said Schuman. 'We have the attitude to compete and will go in with the goal to win the tournament, which is no different than any other week. '
At the Gopher Invitational, the Badgers will get a chance to play against some of the top Big Ten teams this year, as well as a few other top competitors from across the nation.
Joining Wisconsin in the 12-team tournament will be host Minnesota, Arkansas, Georgia Southern, Illinois, Indiana, Lamar, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Princeton, San Diego and SMU.
'We're going to have to really jump into the competition this weekend, ' said Schuman. 'We had an opportunity to win last week in California but couldn't finish things off. We'll be playing a strong field on a strong course and we're really looking forward to it.'
Each participating team will bring along five active players, with only the top four players' scores counting towards the final team scores.
Making the trip for Wisconsin will be Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.), Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.), Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) and Patrick Duffy (Appleton, Wis.).
The Badgers plan to leave Madison tonight to head toward Minneapolis and shoot a practice round tomorrow morning before play starts on Sept. 15. Each player will shoot 36 holes on Sept. 15 and a final 18 on Sept. 16.
UW's second competition of the season will be the Gopher Invitational, lasting from Sept. 15-16 in Minneapolis, Minn., at Spring Hill Golf Club.
