October 03, 2008 | Women's Soccer
In their first Big Ten road game of the season Friday, the Wisconsin women's soccer team struggled against Ohio State's quick offense, losing 4-0 and falling to a 6-5-1 season record.
The Badger freshmen put up a collective effort, accounting for five of the six shots on goal and nine of Wisconsin's 13 total shots, but could not get past Buckeye goalkeeper Lauren Robertson. This is Robertson's third straight shutout, her second straight against a Big Ten team, and she had six saves in the game. Wisconsin goalkeeper Jamie Klages had nine total saves, but gave up four, two within the first 30 minutes of play.
Ohio State's Lisa Collision scored the first two within six minutes of each other, each one assisted by Ashley Bowyer Collision and Bowyer are the Buckeyes' top two leading scorers, and they were goals five and six for Collision this season. In the second half of play, the Badgers tried to work their way out of the two-goal deficit, more than doubling their shot count from the first period.
Wisconsin freshman leading scorer Laurie Nosbusch led the team with two shots on goal, bringing her season total to 25 with 14 points and five goals. Freshmen Erin Jacobsen, Leigh Williams, Meghan Flannery and sophomore Kellyn Flanagan also put up shots, but did not score.
The game's third goal was scored by Ohio State's Paige Maxwell, her third of the season, with assists from Alex Burzynski and Taylor Moront on a feed from just inside the box. The Buckeyes pulled away, then brought the lead to 4-0 with only seven minutes to go on another shot from 12 yards out into the corner of the net. Laura Roberts scored the final goal from Caitlin Colfer, and it was her first of the season.
Wisconsin will stay on the road Sunday to face No. 22 Penn State on Jeffrey Field at 11 a.m. The game will be aired on the Big Ten Network. Check out UWBadgers.com for scores and highlights.
