UW head coach Lisa Stone post-game quotes
December 22, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Opening Statement: 'They really shot the lights out when they are shooting nearly 60 percent in the first half and 70 percent through the second half. They played very, very well and we just started playing a little too late. But again, it is one game and we have a lot of games to go. We learned a few things here and in a week we have another team coming in from the Big Ten that is a very high offensive team as well. Hats off to Iowa, they played very well tonight. We had some good looks in the first half, but they just didn't go down and I think that might have been a momentum shift for us but unfortunately they didn't go in. We put a little valiant effort together in the second half. We only had 10 turnovers but we didn 't shoot it very well and you can't foul Iowa. They are 22-of-30 from the line and picked up 22 points right from the free throw line. It's tough. It was a tough loss but we have a great group in there and they need to keep their heads held high because we worked really hard and we will rebound from this one.'
On Wendy Ausdemore: 'You can't lose her [Wendy Ausdemore] for a minute and we talked to our players about it. She doesn 't need a lot of room and they have penetrators. When they have [Kristi] Smith there who can penetrate a gap, you can't really help. So you have to bring help from somewhere else. They have a big a 6-6 kid inside and they have nice balance. They have a nice team and the next time we play them, hopefully we will be a bit better. '
On the holiday break and giving the team little time off: 'It has been a great start and this is just one game and it is one that we will learn from and we hold our heads high as we go into the holiday. A very Merry Christmas to our wonderful fans. They were very good tonight and we need you back on Monday against the Gophers. Our players will have a chance to get home with their families and come back on Friday for practice and we'll get ready for Minnesota.'
